Made a trip to the Blue Monk, a Belgian Beer and Craft Beer bar and eatery on Elmwood Ave. in Buffalo, NY. If you haven’t been to Blue Monk, and you love craft beer as much as my friends and I do, I am not sure what you are waiting for. With a tap list of craft beer brands that is ever changing and seemingly never ending, you are sure to find something you will enjoy.
The reason for this trip was a recent release from Stone Brewing Company in California, the Stone 15th Anniversary Escondidian Imperial Black IPA, released on August 15th 2011 and tapped at Blue Monk August 26th. What better way to spend a Friday night than enjoying craft beer with great friends?
Style – American Black IPA
ABV – 10.8%
Appearance – As you can see from the picture above, this beer pours a very dark brown color with a tan head. It almost reminds me of pouring a glass of freshly brewed strong coffee in a Belgian Beer globe.
Smell – Pine, chocolate and a peat smoked malts. This craft beer is big in every way.
Taste – The peat smoked malts picked up in the smell are front and center, with a hint of coffee. The finish is very bitter dare I say overpowering to a point?
Overall – This was my first go round with the Anniversary Imperial Black IPA craft beer from Stone, and I thought it was simply ok. The finishing bitterness was a little overpowering for my taste, but I loved the flavor before the bitterness onslaught.
More to come, this craft beer was the start of the night.
